Ireland (Eire) is Europe's third largest island, lying between the Ilrish Sea and the Atlantic Ocean about 50 miles off the western shores of Britain. Its mild,maritime climate and all-too-frequent gentle rainfall (heaviest in the west) produce lush green vegetation all over the island.Within the mountains that girdle nmch of the coastline lie low,central plains, bisected from north to south by the great River Shannon and its tributaries that form a huge network of navigable inland waterways.
