故事发生在印度，当时那里还有很多英国人。这些人或在政府、军队里，或在铁路、贸易界工作。他们并不都像书中玛丽的父母一样，但是其中许多人雇佣了大量的印度仆人，而且有时欧洲母亲并不在照顾孩子上花太多时间，炎热的气候对欧洲人不利，那里还有医生们都所知甚少的疾病。玛丽就是这样成为一个不健康，甚至乖戾的女孩。　　玛丽了解了印度之后，英格兰就显得陌生了，而约克郡的草甸子则更为奇异了。那里冬季气候寒冷，树木稀疏，挡不住劲吹的狂风。凸起的草甸上房屋很少，粗糙的野草对于羊群还尚可食用，但对于牛和别的农场牲畜就不行了。约克郡人认为这挻有益健康，但是一个来自印度而且并不快乐的小孩起初是不会这样想的。
