章节摘录
You keep asking questions based on the last thing a person says. This is called the "elaboration tech-nique.”Choose questions that will get the other person to elaborate on what he/she is saying.Askquestions similar to those a reporter might ask to draw a person out:who, what, when, where, andwhy questions. Reading 7 If you started a conversation with another person, and you're having difficulty ending it,there areseveral signals you can send to the other person that will bring the conversation to its close without hurtinganyone's feelings.Breaking eye contact is a discreet signal that the conversation is about to end. Another way to signal is to use transition words like well,or at any rate. You may want to recap allthat was said.Whatever you do,don't lie to the other person. If you're not interested in talking to him/heragain,don't mention the possibility of a future meeting just to be polite. That's hypocritical.Instead, youmay want to say,"Nice meeting you.”And then, leave. Finally,be sure to give the other person a good, firm handshake. The final impression you make canbe just as important as the initial one you made. Reading 8 And now just let me explain to you the rules of the competition. Each of the contestants has five mi-nutes to present a prepared speech, three minutes to deliver an extemporaneous speech and three minutesto answer questions raised by the judges,During the prepared speech a staff member will raise a red card-board as a signal that there is one minute left. Then,at the end of the five minutes,a bell will ring to letthe speaker know the time has run out. Reading 9 When you learn a foreign language, you must learn more than the vocabulary and the grammar.Tocommunicate successfully in speech, you must also learn the non-verbal language,or "body language”ofthat culture.Body language is a term used to describe facial expressions, gestures, and other movementsof the body that send messages. This means of communication is so important that we may actually saymore with our movements than with words. Reading 10 For some messages, words are not enough.Speaking a foreign language is sometimes difficult becausewe may not understand the non-verbal signals of another culture,or they may mean something very differ-ent from what they mean of our own culture. For example, nodding the head up and down is a gesture thatmay communicate a different message in different parts of the world.ln north America,it means "Iagree".In the Middle East nodding the head down means "I agree”and up means "I disagree".In a con-versation among Japanese it often simply means "I'm listening". Reading 11 Eye contact is also very meaningful, but it,too, can mean different things in different countries.lnsome Spanish-speaking countries, children show respect to an older person by not looking directly into theperson's eyes during a conversation. In other cultures, looking directly into the person's eyes is expected. ……
