前言

  《英语阅读高级教程》是为贯彻国家教委“加强素质教育,重视培养运用语言进行交际的能力,使全国外语教学在2000年上个台阶”的方针,并结合阅读技能培养的新趋势而编写的;既可用作英语速读训练教材,也可作为参加大学英语六级统考的英语精读教材。由于本书设置的阅读理解练习与TOEFL、FEM、WSK、BFT等各类出国测试的习题格式相同,因此也可供学生考前强化训练之用。  全书共18个单元,36篇文章,按文章的词数排序。每单元包括两篇文章——TextA和TextB。每单元的A篇采选近年来的科技文献和科技成果报告;B篇采选有关文化、教育、历史、风俗习惯、心理、环境保护等不同体裁的热门话题,文章语言地道、流畅,多为80年代后期到9O年代初期的新作。所选文章集趣味性、知识性、哲理性于一体,并在语文和体裁两方面,五谷杂粮、各种营养“齐备”——既有显示作家文才纵横的经典作品,也有富于时代气息的现代英语。丰富的内容给读者提供大量的语言共核(1anguagecore),使兴趣各异的理工科和文科学生既雅俗共赏,也可汲取各种不同的营养。  本书为每篇课文编排的练习包括:1)读前准备;2)在上下文情景中猜测课文生词词义;3)有关阅读技巧、修辞、写作方面的知识;4)阅读理解——共四部分,着眼于语篇水平教学,着手于句子水平训练,先见林后见树,既见林又见树。努力引导学生克服在阅读英文篇章时仍存在的一遇到难词就查字典的陋习和只停留在单句表层语意的理解和句子语法结构的积弊,有意识地训练学生按照每课的Sug—gestedReadingTime在规定时间内读完全篇课文,归纳中心意思,以培养直接从英语报刊、书籍吸取专业所需最新信息所必备的语篇理解能力。  自1996年起,大学英语四、六级全国统一考试中阅读理解部分已进行改革,采用新题型,以减少自7O年代以来流行于国内外标准化测试中答案封闭的多项选择题所显示的负面效应,加强学生智力、想象力、创造力三种能力的培养。为体现这一“新”精神,本书注意了配套习题形式的多样化,部分采用了浙江大学外语系SAQ课题组新设计的答案开放式的综合性练习形式:1)完成句子题(SentenceCompletion);2)问答题(QuestionandAnswer);3)摘要完形题(SummaryCloze);4)句子完形题(Gapped’rext)。上述新颖的题型,使学生对课文中出现的单词、词组、习惯用语和句型自然吸收、消化,并将“读”与“写”的技能有机地结合起来。  《英语阅读高级教程》适用于高级英语学习爱好者。全书生词量为2000词左右,覆盖非英语专业研究生(硕士生、博士生)英语教学大纲的基本词汇。全书总阅读量为50000词左右,需36学时左右学完。书后附有练习答案及总词汇表,便于读者查阅。本书在浙江大学博士生英语教学中作为阅读课教材使用多年,收到良好的教学效果。  本书在编写过程中得到浙江大学研究生院及外语系领导的大力支持。外语系张振中教授和应惠兰教授对该书的体例设计、习题形式提出许多宝贵意见,并给予极大的关注。全书经美籍英语语言文学专家Prof.WilliamAho和英籍训练教师专家Brianw.Tanner审阅。我们在此谨向他们表示诚挚的感谢。  由于编者水平有限,谬误疏漏之处在所难免,敬请广大读者及同行专家不吝赐教。

  Thinking it over, 1 decided that a jerk is basically a person without insight. He is not necessarily a fool or a dope, because some extremely clever persons can be jerks.
