本书是由英国曼彻斯特大学科技学院讲师、翻译与跨文化研究中心硕士课程指导教师梅芙·奥洛汉主编的一本论文集，共收录了来自欧、美、澳以及其他国家与地区译学研究者的论文16篇。 这些文章之所以可以合为一集是因为他们均与赫尔基辛大学的翻译学教授安德鲁·切斯特曼所提出的三种译学研究模式有关。切斯特曼在1998年曾提出过译学研究的三种模式：比较模式、过程模式、因果模式。他认为这些模式是研究者必须面对的，是一种前理论性的准备。选择了哪一种模式，就意味着选择了哪一种研究方法，从而也影响着最终所形成的理论样态。切斯特曼的这一模式理论对译学研究很有意义，也有较为广泛的影响，引起了不同国度译学学者的关注，并纷纷撰文对此进行讨论。 本书就使得一些分散的相关性研究得以集中，从而让读者更为系统和深入地了解切斯特曼的模式理论。切斯特曼的模式理论是以文本为内容的认知性研究，正如本书的副标题所示。       本书共收录来自欧、美、澳以及其他国家与地区译学研究者的论文16篇，以模式理论为核心，并以对其的多元研究而广泛展开，不仅向人们阐明了该理论的严密性与实践指向性，还向人们展示了其丰富的内涵及对不同视角与方法的包容性。本文集关注译学内部研究，强调对翻译活动的认知性研究，具有很强的方法论意义。同时还将语料库语言学的研究引入译学研究，对翻译研究者有很强的启发性。
