作者简介

　　简·奥斯汀出生于英国乡村小镇史蒂文顿，父亲是位学问渊博的牧师，母亲出身于比较富有的家庭，也具有一定的文化修养。因此，奧斯汀虽然没有上过正规学校，但是家庭的优良条件和读书环境给她提供了自学的便利，培养了她写作的兴趣。 　　《理智与情感》初稿写成于1795年，后来几经修改，过了十多年才出版，是奥斯汀最富于幽默情趣的作品之一。其他著名作品还有《傲慢与偏见》、《曼斯菲尔德花园》、《爱玛》、《诺桑觉寺》和《劝导》。其中最后两部是她病逝以后由哥哥亨利负责出版的，并且开始使用简·奥斯汀这个真名。 　　奥斯汀终生未婚，居住在恬静的乡村小镇，接触到的是小地主乡绅、牧师等人物，因而她的作品中没有重大的社会冲突。她以女性特有的细致入微的观察力，真实地描绘了她周围的小天地，尤其是绅士淑女间的爱情和婚姻风波，格调轻松诙谐，深受读者欢迎。

　　Elinor could have given her immediate relief by suggesting thepossibility of its being Miss Mortons mother, rather than her own, whomthey were about to behold; but instead of doing that, she assured her, andwith great sincerity, that she did pity her,——to the utter amazement of Lucy,who, though really uncomfortable herself, hoped at least to be an object ofirrepressible envy to Elinor.　　Mrs Ferrars was a little, thin woman, upright, even to formality, inher figure, and serious, even to sourness, in her aspect. Her complexionwas sallow; and her features small, without beauty, and naturallywithout expression; but a lucky contraction of the brow had rescuedher countenance from the disgrace of insipidity, by giving it the strongcharacters of pride and ill-nature.
