章节摘录
版权页: 插图: Upon undergoing early tribal mergers,China began to see the emergence of theprimitive form of a country--nation states. These nation states formed alliances toconsolidate their political powers and electedchiefs amongst them. It was during thisperiod that the legend of the abdicationof Yao, Shun and Yu came into being. Yao,Shun and Yu were kings of their respectivenation states. Through the abdication oftheir sovereignty, they took turns to rule aschief of the alliance that they had formed.Through this system of abdication betweenYao, Shun and Yu, we can see that duringthat time, power was a precarious entity andit constantly shifted between the differentnation states. Out of the trio--Yao, Shun and Yu--thestory of Yu, the successor of Shun, is themost widely circulated. Similar to Westerncivilization, the history of China alsodocuments the story of a great flood, and itoccurred during the period of Shun's rule.Different from the story of Noah's Ark,Shun had chosen to deal with the flood. Heappointed his subordinates Gun and Gun'sson, Yu, to control the flood. Yu took adecade to dredge the rivers, and directed thewater to the sea, finally quelling the flood.Yu was very dedicated to his task, so muchso that during the period of his work, he hadpassed his house three times without going in, and he even missed the birth of hischild. In the Chinese tradition, one's dedication to his ideals and career is greatlyrespected by the people. Hence, Yu is also known as "Da Yu" or the "Great Yu."
