Metonymy and Synecdoche Metonymy and synecdoche are two related kinds of figures of speech. They share the point incommon that both apply a substitution to refer to certain objects instead of naming them directly. Bothare closely related to each other in that the replacement of a word by one closely related to the original. They both are regarded as important poetic devices for creating vivid imagery. However, they are different in that metonymy means using the name of one thing for anotherclosely related to it. In the question "What would the Pentagon think of the presidents new militaryproposals?" the "Pentagon" is used instead of "Department of Defense", although it is only the buildingin which the department is housed. While synecdoche is a figure of speech in which a part represents thewhole, as in the expression "hired hands" for workmen or, less commonly, the whole represents a part,as in the use of the word "society" to mean high society. More examples:1. Metonymy The pen is mightier than the sword. (Pen and sword represent publishing and military force respectively. )Im studying Shakespeare. (The author is used to stand for his works. ) He must have been spoilt from the cradle. (Cradle represents childhood. ) The gray hair should be respected. (The gray hair represents the old or the aged. ) Jacky Chen is approved by Hollywood. (Hollywood refers to American film-making industry. )2. Synecdoche They can hardly earn enough everyday bread. (Everyday bread means food. )
