  Mercury is one of the first metals to be discovered by humans; the earliest known use dates to the pyramids of Egypt, about 1500 years BCE. Much mysticism and erroneous assumptions have surrounded itthroughout the centuries, probably due to the fact that it is liquid at room temperature. In 210 BCE, the Chinese emperor Qin Shi Huang died from ingesting a mercury-laden concoction that was intended to make him immortal. The forebears of modern chemistry, the alchemists, believed that mercury was the common base of all metals and that one could make any metal by adding other substances to it. Mercury was even used, unsuccessfully, to treat syphilis for at least 400 years.  ……
