Cultural identity， hidden behind all kinds of social conflicts and social forces， is determined by the internal differences， such as race， gender， class， age， language， the values of individual existence， etc. And all of these differences are related to cultural identity. So， in terms of cultural study in the broad sense， the theoretical studies on the writers as the subject can be boiled down to the writers‘ cultural identity. Having left their own native land， the overseas Chinese writers’ identity cannot butconfront the reestablishment and reconstruction in different ways，thus their cultural identity is forever changing， and this change canin turn directly affect their cultural imagination and their literarycreation， resulting in a unique， ever-changing and constantlydeveloping state and nature. Even though they have beennaturalized as the citizens of their residing countries， the fact thattheir identity and consciousness are determined by their mothertongue will never change， for the new national identity is just arational choice， while their internalized cultural psychology andinclination is pre-rational or “ super-rational. “ Their rational and actualized identification and their feeling forthe national culture find themselves bogged down in endlesscontradiction. The writers‘ collision with and resistance to thecultural identity together help form their unique outlook，perspective as well as literary styles on their lives， all of which havebranded their works with the mark of “identity”. Therefore， it isvery meaningful and promising to study their roles， the switch oftheir roles， and the writing characteristics brought along by thesechanges and differences. Nowadays， there appears an obvious“cultural switch” of literary studies in international academia，which focus the attention more to the race， gender， class andidentity issues in literature. 　　……
