　　Manning and his eight brothers and sisters had to take care of themselves. Sometimes their mother would disappear for days at a time, leaving almost nothing in the house for the children to eat. Manning ate margarine and sugar sandwiches. "It was hard," he recalls. "It was real hard." Finally state officials got involved and sent the children to foster homes. Manning was moved from one foster family to the next. At the age of 16, he was sent to the Mc Cobb Home for Boys. By then he had learned not to get attached to anything around him, including schools, neighborhoods, and people. "I was just used to having things snatched away from me," he says. One thing Manning held onto was his dream of being an artist. His stepfather had taught him to draw and paint when he was a little boy. Manning had been doing art ever since. He hoped to live in Paris and make a living by selling paintings. So at age 18, he went to college to study art. He had an eerie feeling, though. Everything he had ever loved had been taken away from him. What if the same thing happened with painting？ What if he somehow lost his sight？He had no reason to think he would lose his vision, but he prepared for it any way. He practiced washing dishes with his eyes closed. He dialed the telephone in the dark. He kept studying to be an artist, but he said, "The way things have been going in my life, you know, it might not happen."
