本书运用当代语言学，尤其是社会语言学、功能语言学及语篇学的理论和分析方法，研究各种语体英语的语言特点及其要实现的交际功能。    英语的使用由于“使用者”、“语言媒介”、“言者态度”、“语言功能”及“文学体裁”的不同而形成了形式各异的语体，本书按此将英语语体分为五大类及相应的各种小类，配以大量语言使用的实例，从“语音”、“字系”、“词汇”、“语法”、“语义”等五个语言层面进行较为详细的分析，描述各种语体英语的主要语言特点、阐明语言使用与“语境”、“情景”及“交际目的”之间的内在关系和一般规律，从而拓宽英语学习者的语言知识，提高其使用英语的实际能力，学会在不同语境和场合使用恰当得体的英语。    本书既可作为英语工作者的常用工具书，又可作为高年级学生和研究生的教科书，亦适用于具有相当水平的英语自学者。

作者简介

薛汉荣，1941年生，江苏省无锡市人，英语教授，硕士生导师，总参系统保留高级专家、特别突出贡献奖获得者。历任解放军外国语学院英语系主任、训练部副部长等职务。1988年至1989年，作为高级访问学者，在美国田纳西大学访学，荣获该校“杰出访问学者”称号。多年从事研究生文体学和高级作文的教学工作，英语功底扎实。
