　　Rivers are one of our most important natural resources. Many of the worldsgreat cities are located on rivers, and almost every country has at least one riverflowing through it. River plays an important part in peoples lives.　　Since the beginning of history, people have used rivers for transportation.The longest one in the United States is the Mississippi. The lifeline of Egypt isthe Nile. To the people of India, the Ganges is great, and it is also important fortransportation. Ships can travel along it for a thousand miles. Other great riversare the Congo in Africa and the Mekong in Southeast Asia. The greatest river ofall for navigation, however, is the Amazon in Brazil. It is so wide and so deep thatlarge ships can go about two thousand miles upon it.　　Rivers also provide food to eat, water to drink, and provide water for crops,and chances for fun and recreation for people who live along their banks. Inorder to provide more water for crops, engineers sometimes build a dam across ariver to form a lake. Then people can use the Water not only to irrigatetheirfields but also to make electricity.　　Large cities and factories located near rivers often cause problems. As thecities grow in size and factories increase in number, the water in the riversbecome polluted with chemicals and other materials. People are learning theimportance of doing more to keep their rivers clean if they want to enjoy thebenefits of natural resources.
