In his famous prose piece "On Yue-yang Tower," he wrote "A leader should plan and worry ahead of the people, and enjoy the fruits after the people," which has become a well-known dictum through the ages in China. The Pavilion The universe must have a penchant for elegant men To create one such as Wang Huizhi1 yet again. Whoever paid gold for this pavilion Had fine taste to plant green jade all around. Not trees or grass, garden gems2 spring to winter. Solid as iron, brave in snow, Friend only to the clear winds. Wind brushes through its leaves, Resound tinkling, otherworldly tones Resonant through the eons. A saint must have died, turned into bamboo. For its noble character is akin: Straight, neat, hollow and pure white inside. Its gentle stems so aglow with silken sheen, Young shoots tender as a baby's skin. Up it grows to touch crowns of pines and laurels, Down on the ground it accompanies orchids. On clear days in sweet mountains by emerald rivers, Or beneath the silvery light of the moon, Anywhere named, you see its adornment everywhere. Calm and quiet, as a hermit in meditation there. No regal ladies' tears, or divine tunes of Ling Lun,Deem it unworldly, unworldly in its own right. As the phoenix takes wing, the dragon scales the height, By rivers, below clouds, it makes company of its owner. Dust choking the world, why not retire to this pavilion of yore ? We shall all sit under its eaves, sing from the pavilion there,Revel in our revels, till we forget the lapse of time.
