前言

　　《英国文学及选读》是复旦大学英语系的重点必修课，我系的许多著名专家学者如杨岂深、杨烈、孙大雨、索天章、丰华瞻、陆谷孙等教授都讲授过这门课程。由于他们渊博的学识和精湛的教法，这门课深受学生们的欢迎。为了配合这门课程，杨岂深和孙铢教授于1981年组织系里的中青年学术骨干，编撰了三卷本的《英国文学选读》。在过去的二十多年中，这套教材在我系的英国文学教学中发挥了很大的作用，得到了广泛的好评。　　记得在二十世纪八十年代末的一天，我应邀到任孟昭教授家中，参加了孙铢教授召集的会议，专门讨论修订《英国文学选读》一事，与会者还有巫漪云和陈雄尚教授。由于当时许多参编者难以聚集在一起，有的人则联系不上，还牵涉到版权的问题，因此修订一事就搁置了起来，这样一停就是二十年。　　2003年，复旦大学外文学院成立。为了更好地促进专业教学工作，院领导十分重视重点课程的教材建设。黄勇民院长建议在原来《英国文学选读》的基础上，重新编撰一本英国文学教材，以适应新时期英语专业教学和学科发展的需要。为此，我联系了汪洪章和卢丽安老师，向他们谈了设想，他们欣然接受了这项工作。之后，我们讨论了编撰方案，确定了每个人的分工，还邀请了部分研究生参加编注工作。　　传承与创新是我们的编撰原则。三卷本的《英国文学选读》闪烁着老一辈专家学者的智慧，也展示了他们深厚的学术底蕴，对此我们应该加以传承。所以我们借鉴了他们的许多选篇和注解的思路，并在此基础上，参考了许多其他国内外同类的权威读本及选集，最后选定了本书的篇目并加以注释。应该指出，限于当时的情形和条件，三卷本的《英国文学选读》在选篇上有一些局限，有些注释也不甚准确，个别选篇的来源不够权威且注释过多。为此，根据目前的教学情况，我们作了一些改进，调整了选篇，精简了注释，缩短了篇幅，增加了当代作家作品的容量以及对时代背景和文学发展的综述，力求给英语专业的学生和英国文学爱好者提供系统的关于英国作家和作品的介绍。

内容概要

　　《英国文学选读》由复旦大学外文学院英语系主编。《英国文学选读》选取了自14世纪起到当代共九十多位英国作家具有代表性的作品，其中包括诗歌、戏剧、小说、散文等体裁。在编写过程中，编者参考了许多国内外同类的权威读本及选集，并结合自己多年的研究和教学经验，选定了《英国文学选读》的篇目。所选的作品及片段由作者简介、题解、原文及注释四部分组成，还配了作者像。对英国文学的重要发展时期，编者做了背景介绍及综述，以方便英语专业的学生以及爱好英国文学的读者阅读、了解和欣赏英国文学作品。　　《英国文学选读》是集体合作的结果，编注人员及分工如下：　　汪洪章负责中古英国文学、文艺复兴时期英国文学、17世纪英国文学、18世纪英国文学部分，丁妍、任战、赵舒静参加编注。　　孙建负责浪漫主义时期英国文学、维多利亚时期英国文学、20世纪英国文学部分，吉磊、张雅琳、韦春晓、杨宁参加编注。　　卢丽安负责二战后的英国文学部分，张楠、吕珏、邹美旸参加编注。
