He is the author of Variativon Across Speech and Writing （1991）and dimensions of Register Variation（1995）.Susan Conrad is Assistant Professor in the Program in Linguistics in the Department of English at Iowa State University. Randi Reppen is Director of the program in lntensive English in the Department of English at Northern Arizona University.
