章节摘录

Still the American prankster, George appeared on a Yanan stage in aChinese opera performance in full ancient costume regalia and elaborate paintedfacial mask. At the same time he was a hard-working conscientious doctor in aregion where medical men were scarce. Be treated literally thousands of patients, from impoverished peasants to Zhou Enlai and Mao Zedong, the highestranking Communist leaders. When Norman Bethune, the famous Canadiansurgeon arrived, George was there to greet him. It was during the Yanan periodthat George and Edgar Snow grew especially close, in a friendship that was tolast until Ed's death in Geneva in February, 1972, with George at his bedside. After the People' s Republic was formed in 1949, George, who had beenan internist, switched to venereology and dermatology because, he said, "Thatwas what was needed." He went tramping all over China with teams eliminat-ing venereal diseases which had been endemic for years, thanks to foreignincursions, among ethnic minority people in China's border regions. Similarteams halted schistosomiasis, scourge of the Nile and the large watery re-gions of south China where the tiny snail hosts breed. In Beijing George worked in the Dermatology and Venereology Instituteand seemed to spend the rest of his time solving other people' s problems. Hewas everybody' s friend, everybody came to him with their troubles. If therehadn't been the phrase "Let George Do It," we would have had to invent it. Hewould listen carefully, thoughtfully, to what you had to say, then offer somesuggestion that suddenly made the whole thing obvious and simple, andusually conclude with a quip that tickled you into a grin. My blood pressurewas up a bit, a few years back, but every time George took it, I was normal. Hewas the world's greatest calmer-downer. ……?
