PrehistoryBritish bestsellerism is rooted in different cultural andcommereial subsoil from Amerieas. Britain has always preserved ahigher retail cost for new books: protected formally, for a hundredyears after the 1890s, by the NBA. Educational and class systemshave been other differentiating factors.None the less, one perceives the same large shapes. One-offbestsellers, those that sell fastest, tend to be short-lived. Andthere is a polarity between these solo, short-life blockbustersand bestselling lines of fiction to which habituated readers aregenre-loyal, often over many years.There were bestsellers before bestseller lists, just as there werenovels before that term came into use. Samuel Riehardsonsenthusiastic admirers (Pamela-ites) prefigure innumerablesubsequent enthusiasms.
