章节摘录

版权页:插图:During the festival, street performances were held. After the lan-terns were lit, the sounds of gongs and drums filled the streets in urbanand suburban areas. Performances included dragon dances, lionlanterns and land boats, walking on stilts, carrying trunks, throwingstone blocks, juggling with poles, balancing jars on the head, andsinging folk songs. The performers gave shows while walking alongthe streets. Arriving at an open space or invited by people sitting at teatables in front of shops, they would stop to stage performances. Thestreet performances usually ended at midnight, but on the 15th daythe main day of the Lantern Festival, the merry-making would last theentire night. In ancient times, the Lantern Festival is also a romantic holiday andcould be seen as Chinese Valentine' s Day. In ancient China, unmar-ried young girls are not allowed to go out free, but they could stroll outin company on festivals. And appreciating the flower lanterns on the Lantern Festival provides them an opportunity to communicate with others. The unmarried young men and women often make use of it to find a "target" for their future marriage. The young people also meet with their Valentines during the Festival. An ancient poem goes like this.
